Andrew Green 1927-2004

Andrew Green was inspired to take up the part-time occupation of ghosthunter as a teenager in the autumn of 1944 when he climbed the 70ft tower of a haunted house and on reaching the top was suddenly compelled to "walk over the edge". The house had recorded 20 suicides from that tower, he could have been No. 21.

He operated in virtual obscurity as an amateur parapsychologist until April 1996, when he was asked to investigate reports of paranormal sightings at the Royal Albert Hall.

In 1950 he formed the Ealing Society for Investigation of Psychic
Phenomena (for which he carried out research projects on "child
perception" and "telehypnosis"); and in 1952 he co-founded the Lewisham
Psychic Research Society and the National Federation of Psychic
Research Societies. He also wrote articles and, from the early 1970s,
concentrated on investigating and writing about the paranormal
full-time.

Green was often called upon as a consultant,
investigating sightings in houses, pubs, theatres and even underground
stations (Covent Garden: a tall man in a homburg, probably an actor who
had been stabbed). He was called in to advise the American Disney
Corporation on a new project.

He once told The Telegraph, "I try to convince people that it may be a medical or mental problem. I'll ask to speak to their doctor, and
nine times out of 10 they're taking the wrong drugs." But he felt poltergeists were a different matter, "I knew a case where a
typewriter exploded because a farmer was so frustrated typing out
European Union forms."

He has penned many books on the subject of ghosthunting and paranormal investigations, including what has become something of a classic: Ghost Hunting: A Practical Guide.

Sadly, through his countless investigations, Andrew believes he only ever saw on ghost in 1950, a phantom fox terrier that had died 12 years earlier in his uncle's house in Devon.
