Doctor Matthew Keynes pays his regular weekly visit to his wife's graveside. Outside the cemetery, he meets with dear friends Lady Katherine and Major Carter, out for their weekly stroll in the park. Lady Katherine and Keynes walk together and come across a notable figure with whom Keynes is less than comfortable.

That night, in the early hours, Keynes is awoken by an unexpected visitor: a uniformed police officer with a nnote from and old friend. The note, written in haste by Merrick, requests Keynes attend his wife's grave with immediate haste.
